Trial evidence

Tribulus and Testosterone: What Human Trials Show

Quick answer

Tribulus terrestris testosterone studies mostly found no change. A 2025 review of 10 studies in 483 men found no significant change in androgen levels in 8 of them. The trials used 400 to 750 mg a day, while Protoflow lists 120 mg of tribulus per two capsules. The evidence is low in quality.

Does tribulus terrestris raise testosterone in men?

Mostly no. A 2025 systematic review covered 10 studies in 483 men aged 16 to 70, and 8 of them found no significant change in androgen levels (Vilar Neto et al., Nutrients 2025).

Only 2 studies showed a rise in total testosterone, and the rise was small (60 to 70 ng/dL) in men who already had low levels. Half the studies were of low methodological quality. The authors conclude that there is no robust evidence for raising testosterone (Vilar Neto et al., Nutrients 2025).

We therefore do not say tribulus lifts testosterone, and we do not say Protoflow does. Our epimedium and tribulus page gives the label view.

How much tribulus is in Protoflow compared with trial doses?

Protoflow lists 120 mg of tribulus fruit per two capsules. That is under a third of the 400 mg low end of the dose range in the review (Vilar Neto et al., Nutrients 2025).

So even if trial results had been strong, they would not transfer to this bottle. A study of one amount of one herb says little about 14 ingredients in small amounts. The label does not say how much of the fruit is active.

In the trials

400 to 750 mg a day for 1 to 3 months.

On the label

120 mg per two capsules, with other herbs.

Does tribulus work for erections or sex drive?

The evidence is low in quality. In the same review, tribulus improved erectile function scores in 3 of 5 studies that measured it (Vilar Neto et al., Nutrients 2025).

NCCIH is blunter on the whole field: no complementary approach has been shown to be safe and effective for sexual enhancement or ED (NCCIH, Erectile Dysfunction/Sexual Enhancement). ED can also signal other problems, such as clogged vessels or diabetes, so it deserves a doctor's visit.

Our sources do not detail tribulus side effects, so we cannot list them. Ask your doctor or pharmacist, and keep taking prescribed medicine.

How do you find out if your testosterone is really low?

Ask your doctor for a blood test. Mayo Clinic says doctors usually measure at least twice before talking about treatment (Mayo Clinic, Testosterone and Aging).

Levels fall about 1 percent a year after age 30 or 40, and tiredness, low mood and poor sleep have many other causes. A supplement cannot diagnose anything. Most "T booster" products lack published data: 61.5 percent of 50 products had none showing a testosterone rise (Clemesha et al., World J Mens Health 2020). The benefits page sorts Protoflow's claims from the evidence.

FAQ

Tribulus and hormone questions

01Why did two tribulus studies show a testosterone rise?

Both were in men who already had low testosterone, and the rise was small, 60 to 70 ng/dL. That does not carry over to men with normal levels, and the review calls the evidence low in quality.

02What are the side effects of tribulus?

The sources we hold do not list them, so we cannot give a reliable answer. Ask your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you take heart, blood pressure or diabetes medicine.

03Why do most testosterone booster products lack proof?

A study of 50 such products found that 61.5 percent had no published data on testosterone at all. Labels can promise a result that no one has measured, so check for trial evidence, not claims.
