Herbal Prostate Supplement vs Prescription Medicine

Quick answer

An herbal supplement vs prostate medication is not a fair match. Prescription medicines are chosen after an exam and tests, while supplements like Protoflow are not approved to treat BPH and have no product trial. Protoflow does not replace tamsulosin, finasteride or any prescribed medicine. Keep taking what your doctor prescribed.

What is the difference between a herbal supplement and prostate medication?

A prescription medicine is a drug approved for a stated use. An herbal supplement is a food-type product that FDA does not approve before sale (FDA, Dietary Supplements Q&A).

That gap matters. A supplement may not claim to treat or cure BPH. A medicine must show benefit in trials to earn that claim. Protoflow is a dietary supplement: it has a full label but no product trial. Our medicines guide covers the label side.

Is saw palmetto as good as finasteride or tamsulosin?

We found no head-to-head trial we could cite, so we cannot say it matches either one. What we can say is how saw palmetto did against a dummy capsule: no better (Barry et al., JAMA 2011 (CAMUS)).

A 27-trial review also found little or no difference in urinary symptoms (Cochrane review, Franco 2023). NIDDK lists the medicine classes for BPH as alpha blockers, 5-alpha reductase inhibitors and PDE-5 inhibitors (NIDDK, Prostate Enlargement (BPH)). It does not list herbs.

Protoflow holds 84.5 mg of saw palmetto, about a quarter of the 320 mg trial dose. It has not been tested for BPH.

Never swap on your own

Do not stop or replace a prescribed medicine for a supplement. Talk to your doctor first.

Can you take a supplement and prostate medicine together?

Only your doctor or pharmacist can tell you. Supplements can interact with medicines, and some may raise bleeding risk (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely). The Protoflow label says to consult a physician if you take any medication.

One practical point: finasteride and dutasteride lower PSA, so the doctor reading a PSA needs to know you take them (NCI, PSA Test Fact Sheet).

  • Heart and blood pressure medicines
  • Diabetes medicines and statins
  • Tamsulosin or finasteride

What should you do before choosing either one?

Get the cause of your symptoms checked first. A weak stream, straining or waking at night to pee can mean BPH, infection, diabetes or prostate cancer, and the right care depends on which (NHS, Enlarged Prostate).

Get care right away

Unable to pee, blood in the urine, fever with painful peeing, or severe lower belly pain.

If you want to try a supplement alongside care, bring the bottle to your visit. Our BPH basics guide and fit check help you prepare.

FAQ

Supplement and medicine questions

01What do alpha blockers and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors do?

Alpha blockers relax muscle near the bladder outlet to ease flow. 5-alpha reductase inhibitors work on the hormone pathway tied to prostate growth. Your doctor picks between them, or both, based on your exam and tests.

02Why does my doctor need to know about herbal products?

Herbs can interact with medicines, affect bleeding or change how a test is read. Doctors cannot weigh risks they do not know about, so share every supplement name, dose and start date at each visit.

03Can a supplement help me stop my prostate medicine?

No. Do not stop a prescribed medicine to try a supplement. Trials of the best-known prostate herb showed no benefit over placebo. Any change to your medicine should come from your doctor after a check.
