Oat Straw: Evidence, Gluten Questions and Typical Amounts
Oat straw benefits, as the European Medicines Agency describes them, are traditional: relief of mild mental stress and help with sleep. Clinical evidence is called insufficient, and the monograph lists no prostate or urinary use. Protoflow lists 32 mg of oat straw per serving, one of the smallest lines on its label.

What is oat straw, and what are its benefits?
Oat straw is the green stalk and leaf of the oat plant, Avena sativa, cut before it flowers. The European Medicines Agency lists it as a traditional herbal medicine for relief of mild symptoms of mental stress and as an aid to sleep, for adults and adolescents over 12 (EMA, Avenae herba (oat herb)).
"Traditional" is the key word. The agency says clinical evidence is insufficient, and the indication rests on at least 30 years of use, with rat studies as the only data it cites.
The same monograph has no prostate, bladder or urinary indication. Our inosine and oat straw page explains how it sits on the Protoflow label.
- Part used: aerial parts, the stalk and leaf
- Traditional use: mild stress, sleep
- Prostate use: none listed
Does oat straw contain gluten?
We cannot confirm that from the label. Oat straw is the stalk, not the grain, but oats often grow and get processed near wheat and barley, so a gluten statement is the only reliable answer.
The Protoflow label has no gluten-free line. The sales page says "Non-GMO, vegan and gluten-free", and the vegan part conflicts with the label: the capsule is gelatin. We read the gluten part as unverified until a lab report is published.
People with celiac disease should ask the order desk for a written answer. The label's other ingredients are rice flour, gelatin, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, maltodextrin, soy protein concentrate and water. That list names soy, not wheat. See the full panel on the supplement facts page.

How much oat straw is in Protoflow?
Protoflow lists Oat Straw (Stalks) at 32 mg per serving of two capsules, or 16 mg per capsule. Among the herbs, only cayenne at 20 mg is smaller.
We found no dose figure for oat straw in the sources we read, so we cannot call 32 mg a typical amount. The herbal monograph cited here gives a use, not a number we can compare (EMA, Avenae herba (oat herb)). No trial tested Protoflow.

See packsDoes oat straw extract matter in this formula?
It is a minor line, and the label does not say if it is a powder or an extract. The agency reports no side effects at the time of its assessment, but that does not cover a 14-ingredient capsule.
The bigger questions sit elsewhere on the label: niacin above its upper limit, herbs with thin evidence, and a gelatin capsule. We lay out those claims against the evidence on the benefits page.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before use if you take sleep or sedating medicines. Keep taking prescribed medicine.

FAQ
Oat straw questions
01Can oat straw help you sleep?
It is used traditionally as a sleep aid, but the European Medicines Agency says clinical evidence is insufficient. Its support comes from long use and rat studies. Sleep trouble that lasts deserves a doctor's check.
02Does oat straw have a prostate or bladder use?
No. The European monograph lists only mild stress and sleep, and has no prostate, bladder or urinary indication. We found no source linking oat straw to urinary symptoms.
03Are there known side effects of oat straw?
The agency reported none at the time of its assessment. That covers oat straw alone. In a capsule with 13 other actives, a reaction could come from any of them, so report anything unusual to your doctor.
