Muira Puama: Traditional Use vs Human Evidence
Muira puama benefits are mostly traditional claims, not trial results. The root of this Brazilian shrub has long been used as a folk aphrodisiac, but the research we read is about safety, not proof that it works. Protoflow lists 200 mg of muira puama root per serving, and no study tested that amount.

What is muira puama?
Muira puama is the root and bark of a small tree from the Amazon region, known to botanists as Ptychopetalum olacoides. In Brazil it is a folk remedy for low desire and tiredness, and supplement makers sometimes call it "potency wood".
That history is the reason it appears in men's formulas. History is not a trial. A herb can be used for generations and still do little in a controlled study.
Our muira puama, damiana and catuaba page shows how the three herbs sit together on the Protoflow label.
- Part used: root
- Traditional use: desire, energy, stamina
- Label amount: 200 mg per two capsules
Do muira puama benefits have human evidence?
Muira puama benefits have little solid human evidence behind them. The main review we read looked at the side effects of 15 herbal aphrodisiacs, including muira puama, and it was not a test of whether any of them work (Brunetti et al., Pharmaceuticals 2020).
The authors say few data exist on side effects for several of these plants and that more controlled studies are needed. NIH goes further and states that no complementary approach has been shown safe and effective for sexual enhancement or ED (NCCIH, Erectile Dysfunction/Sexual Enhancement).
We found no trial in the sources we read that tested muira puama for the prostate, the bladder or urine flow. Nothing here shows that Protoflow helps with any of those.
| Source | What it offers |
|---|---|
| Folk use | Centuries of use in Brazil, no measured results |
| Safety review | Mostly mild effects at usual doses; data are few |
| NIH sexual health page | No herbal approach shown safe and effective |
| Trials in men's urinary health | None found |
What are the side effects of muira puama?
Muira puama side effects are not well mapped, because few studies exist. The safety review found that most of the herbs it covered appeared safe at therapeutic doses, with mild to severe effects possible after overdosing or with unstandardized products (Brunetti et al., Pharmaceuticals 2020).
The authors call drug interactions the bigger worry. Aphrodisiac herbs are often mixed with other plant extracts or with medicines, and nobody has mapped the combinations.
Protoflow combines 14 actives, so a reaction could come from any one of them. Read the full list on our side effects page.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before use if you take blood pressure, heart, mood or diabetes medicines. Keep taking prescribed medicine.

See packsHow much muira puama is in Protoflow?
Protoflow lists Muira Puama (Root) at 200 mg per serving of two capsules, which is 100 mg per capsule. It ties with damiana as the next-largest lines after hawthorn and epimedium.
The label does not say if the root is a plain powder or an extract. We found no study that used this amount, so we cannot say what 200 mg does. The sales page lists muira puama among eight herbs, and the label has 14 actives. See the wider picture on the benefits page.
The bottle says to consult a physician prior to use if you take any medication. Treat that line as a real step, not fine print.

FAQ
Muira puama questions
01Why is muira puama sometimes called potency wood?
It is a nickname from Brazilian folk use, where the root was taken for desire and stamina. The name describes tradition, not trial results. We found no study showing that the root changes male sexual function.
02Can muira puama be mixed with other herbs safely?
Nobody can say for sure. The safety review we read calls herb and drug combinations a bigger concern than single doses, because they are rarely studied. If you take medicines, ask your doctor or pharmacist before using a multi-herb capsule.
03Does muira puama change urine flow or bladder function?
We found no human trial showing that it does. Its traditional use is about desire and energy, not the bladder. A weak stream or night trips to pee need a doctor's check, because the cause matters.
