Can Supplements Boost Testosterone? What Studies Show

Quick answer

Can supplements boost testosterone? The evidence says rarely. A review of 50 popular testosterone-booster products found published data showing a rise for only about a quarter of them, and a review of tribulus found no hormone change in 8 of 10 studies. Protoflow has not been tested for this.

Do testosterone booster supplements work?

Mostly, the evidence is thin. Researchers who checked 50 "T booster" products found published data showing a testosterone rise for only 24.8% of them (Clemesha et al., World J Mens Health 2020).

For 61.5% no data were found. The authors concluded these products may not contain ingredients that support their claims (Clemesha et al., World J Mens Health 2020).

Do herbal testosterone boosters like tribulus work?

Tribulus is the herb most often sold for this, and the research is weak. A review of 10 studies found 8 with no significant change in androgen levels (Vilar Neto et al., Nutrients 2025).

The authors saw no robust evidence for raising testosterone. Studies used 400 to 750 mg a day (Vilar Neto et al., Nutrients 2025). Protoflow lists 120 mg of tribulus per two capsules, below that range.

Lime bars: what 1 or 2 capsules hold, from the Supplement Facts panel. Cyan bars: daily amounts of that ingredient alone in studies (the pale extension shows a range). Amber bars: the adult upper limit, a ceiling to stay under, not a goal. Niacin is the one line that goes past its limit. No trial has tested Protoflow itself.

Are testosterone booster supplements safe?

Safety depends on the product. Many testosterone boosters carry high doses of vitamins; the 50-product review found a median vitamin B3 content of 187.5% of the RDA, and 13 products went over an upper limit (Clemesha et al., World J Mens Health 2020).

Some sexual enhancement products have been found to hide drugs that can drop blood pressure with nitrate medicines (NCCIH, Erectile Dysfunction/Sexual Enhancement).

Where does Protoflow fit in?

Protoflow is a dietary supplement, not a testosterone product. The sales page lists "10 Ways To Turbocharge Your Testosterone" as a bonus guide title, but no study shows the capsules change hormones.

The label lists 14 actives with every amount printed. Its niacin, 75 mg, is above the 35 mg upper limit, so do not add other niacin products (NIH ODS, Niacin). Our benefits page and prostate supplements guide check the claims.

Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask your doctor or pharmacist before adding any supplement.

FAQ

Testosterone supplement questions

01Are there prescription options for low testosterone?

Yes, but only a doctor can decide if you need one. Treatment follows repeated blood tests that show a low level plus fitting symptoms. Mayo Clinic lists risks such as prostate enlargement, so it is a medical decision, not a shop purchase.

02Can zinc or vitamin D supplements raise testosterone?

Only if you are short of them, and even then the effect depends on the person. We did not review studies on those nutrients for this post, so ask your doctor about a blood test before taking extra.

03How can I spot a tainted sexual enhancement product?

Be wary of fast results, vague labels and claims like herbal Viagra. Such products have been found to hide drugs that can dangerously lower blood pressure with nitrate medicines. Check the FDA's list and ask a pharmacist.
